Barcelona Design Week celebrates its most international edition
The Barcelona Design Week brings design to the public with more than 100 activities, from June 12 to 20, which will take place in different areas of the city.
| 18.06.2019 | This year’s highlights include «Design in Diagonal», a journey of creative actions and events along the nearly 12 kilometers that Diagonal Avenue occupies; and the program of activities «Good Design is …», which includes a family day with activities to reflect on the design of the objects that surround us.
Barcelona Design Week is an event organized by the BCD Barcelona Design Center and the Association for the Promotion of Arts and Design (FAD). It has the cooperation of the Design Museum of Barcelona, the promotion of the Barcelona City Council and the support of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The most international edition
It is the most international edition, with more than 30 participating countries, among professionals, companies and entities. The director of the BCD, Isabel Roig, has presented the two exhibitions that they organize:
- «Creating Caring Transitions for Social Good», together with the DesignSingapore Council and The Care Lab, shows 4 finalists of the President Design Awards. It is an exhibition that has already been in New York, London, Hong Kong or Copenhagen.
- International Pavilion with 3 invited countries (Argentina, Brazil and Italy) that present 3 facilities on how they interpret transitions from their different perspectives.
Isabel Roig has also had words for the Summit of Barcelona Design Week, which will revolve around rethinking well-being. «With Service Design Days, with whom we co-organize the congress, we have devised a panel with 22 international speakers, representatives of corporations such as IDEO, Philips Design, frog, Billie Bricks or The Care Lab, the thematic epicenter will be innovation focused on society and we will talk about social challenges as a source of innovation, designing services for health, inclusion or racism».

Designing Transitions
The Barcelona Design Week 2019 will reflect on the capabilities of design and its role in any transition. The reason why the focus has been placed on this motto is that it is a phenomenon that affects us in an amplified way at the present time. In fact, we are in the midst of a necessary and urgent change on a global scale with a goal as basic as the survival of humanity. A moment of transition from a linear economy model to one based on the circular economy that allows an ecologically sustainable world. Also, cities, as an environment of maximum complexity, where multiple interests, conflicts and challenges are crossed, are in transition towards a model of digital and intelligent, innovative and highly technological cities, which must necessarily put the well-being of people in the centre.
The design is, in this sense, a capital discipline to face and adapt to this new scenario. Barcelona Design Week will address issues that will make us reflect on how the design of everything around us should be so that the transition to a circular economy, a more just and formed societies, a world, in short, in natural equilibrium becomes effective.
