ESDi analyzes sustainable fashion with Sewing the Past event
On Thursday, June 6, ESDi School of Design organized a day dedicated to sustainable fashion, under the title Sewing the past.
| 18.06.2019 | The event began at 6:30 p.m. at Espai Emprius de Sabadell (Barcelona) with a short introduction by Mr. Juan José Pérez Villar, Secretary General of the Textile Design Foundation (FUNDIT). Pérez Villar stressed the need to change the current fashion system, in which excessive consumption and production caused by fast fashion are having fatal consequences in the environment.
Round table: Sustainable cycle
After her speech, Dr. Encarna Ruiz, PhD in Journalism from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Director of the University Department of Design Theory and Analysis of the School of Design ESDi, presented the speakers of the round table «Sustainable Cycle». He started talking Marcel·lí Pérez, a textile engineer from the UPC of Terrassa and PDD at IESE. She is currently working at Fundació Indicis with projects, training and dissemination of sustainability in fashion. The engineer wanted to emphasize that a sustainable fashion project always has to take into account three axes:
- Respect for the environment
Ethics and social responsibility
Feasibility and economic solvency
Back to Eco
The brand Back to Eco participated after explaining its fashion project, which creates new products from materials considered waste. He showed how is the production process of his accessories ecodesigned and made in Barcelona, which are manufactured using jeans with social and sustainable criteria.
Pasqual Arnella
Finally, from Pasqual Arnella, a brand that has developed the first line of 100% recycled and recyclable dummies made of paper pulp, it wanted to claim sustainability as a real value and not as something marketinian. He spoke about how large companies take advantage of the issue of sustainability as an argument for sale and not as an objective to contribute to the improvement of the planet.
The three speakers finished the round table urging ESDi students to always work from a sustainable vision and to carry out their projects being responsible with the environment and society.
