IED Barcelona designs the first women’s basketball equipment for FIBA
«Let’s go back to the originals» is the proposed uniform for the 3×3 basketball discipline designed specifically for female anatomy.
| 18.07.2019 | The suit for the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is made with seamless technology, which allows to apply different elasticities and compressions to better adapt to the needs of the players.
Let’s go back to the originals
The project «Let’s go back to the originals» arises from the idea of creating a collection of garments that adapt to the female body to enhance their movements and sports performance. The proposal has been carried out to offer a functional, aesthetic and regulatory team for the players of the 3×3 basketball discipline; a modality that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has incorporated as an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020.
Goodbye to unisex uniforms
Throughout the years, basketball has been characterized by a dress designed for the male body at an aesthetic level, with patterns and sizing. The current unisex uniform hinders freedom of movement of the female body, thus impairing its performance. Thus, athletes must adapt the equipment to their body and even wear compression garments under the official uniform to improve their comfort.
IED Barcelona in action
In view of this situation, IED Barcelona is committed to the design of a collection that redefines the women’s basketball uniform designed specifically for the anatomy of women. Designers Denise Graus and Sheila Casado from BA (Hons) in Fashion Design, who have developed the project «Let’s go back to the originals» in the Innovation Lab of the IED under the supervision of Horge Pérez, have taken care of it.
Universal female sizing
To know what the real needs of the players were, Denise Graus and Sheila Casado conducted a study with different 3×3 athletes at events in Prague and Bucharest. In addition, they tested their proposals with players of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB).
This study has allowed the development of the first female universal sizing for basketball players. With this project, inspired by the uniforms of the sixties-seventies, a timeless uniform has been designed, more functional and coherent with the female body.
This specific size for basketball players not only adapts to the width of the person, but also in the length of the garment. It does so by adding three more sizes to the existing ones (S +, M + and L +) that until now only existed in male uniforms.
Seamless technology
Through the use of seamless technology it has been possible to create the garment with the same fabric, without cuts. This technique allows to play with different elasticities and compressions, adapting better to the needs of the players and reducing the tissue residue.
It also allows generating a set of frames that opens infinite possibilities at the graphic and design levels, starting from the same pattern, providing a 100% customizable result for the different women’s teams that participate in the 3X3 championships.
In collaboration with Lurbel
The uniforms have been developed jointly with Lurbel, company that has materialized the project innovating in the materials. He has done this thanks to the introduction of new filaments with different compositions in order to create an elastic garment, not tied to the body; looking for maximum comfort; and creating an innovative aesthetic thinking about the female body and its needs when playing basketball.
Properties such as breathability of the fabric, antibacterial effect and fast drying are the basis of the functionality of the uniform that is composed of polyester, polyamide and elastane.
