The aim of the contest was to design and make a garment or accessory using only waste materials, mainly from umbrellas.

| 07.07.2019 | Last Friday, June 7, we met the winners of the First Textile Recycling Design Contest that was held at the Asun Domínguez Fashion Academy in Donostia in collaboration with Double Use within the Umbrella Egitasmoa Project.

Waterproof jacket

Silvia Gérica made a beautiful kangaroo waterproof jacket combining the fabrics of three umbrellas in brown tones, for the rest of the elements of the garment she used the laces of slippers and the zipper of an old jacket. The result is spectacular.

Txapela with umbrella fabric

Cristina Rincón made a «txapela» with umbrella fabric. This project received an award thanks to its usability and for being very simple to reproduce. It is an ideal complement for rainy days.

Both winners have been awarded with two double tickets to make an excursion through the cliffs of Jaizkibel aboard the Mater Museum; environmental project very involved in tasks of recovery of the sea and the littoral of pollution by plastics.

A successful edition

The contest has been developed since the beginning of May and has been a successful participation. 31 projects were presented with participants between 10 and 65 years old, mostly students of the academy. Among all the projects, six finalists were selected who could defend it before the jury on Friday, June 7 at Asun Domínguez.

The quality and creativity of the projects presented has been surprising and different options are being considered for a collective exhibition.

The vocation of the contest is to encourage recycling, so some projects will be used in class to teach new ways to recycle textiles. In addition, the possibility of an online tutorial is raised.
